What is a Den?

The pack is divided by grade level, into smaller groups known as dens. In addition to fun Pack activities, each den meets to work together on adventures to complete the requirements for each rank. Each den is led by a Den Leader. The den ranks are Lion, Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, and Arrow of Light.

Cub scouts in kindergarten are Lions.  Lions participate in many fun adventures.  Some examples include:  

Team work and sportsmanship through games
Learning the basics of Cub Scouting, including the Scout Sign and Oath.
Having fun while learning the important of exercise and healthy snacks.
Learning about community helpers.
Participating in nature activities.
Citizenship activities, such as helping others and participating in a flag ceremony.  

During 1st grade, cub scouts are Tigers.  As Tigers, scouts work together on adventures such as:

Creating and playing games that encourage team work and good sportsmanship.         
Learning the Outdoor Code, and putting it into practice during outdoor events and hikes.
Learning to experience nature through sight and sound.  
Demonstrating healthy habits in scouting and at home. 

In 2nd grade, cub scouts advance to the Wolf rank. Wolf adventures include:

Learning to tie knots
Learning how to prepare for weather
Learning more about their community.
Increase their awareness of citizenship and learn to fold a flag.
Practicing their creativity through campfire skits.
Learning how to use a map and compass when hiking.

Bears are cub scouts that are in 3rd grade. Bear activities include:

Learning about hand tools and creating one fun project and one useful project.
Learning knife safety.
Working together to plan and prep for an outdoor activity.
Working together to learn how to set up a tent.
Learning to identify signs on wildlife while hiking.
Learning about patriotism and loyalty.
Learning safe practices through interactions with law enforcement or a fire safety officer.

 

Scouts in 4th grade are Webelos. Scouting adventures for Webelos include:

Meal planning, including budgeting, shopping, and preparing a meal.
Developing fire building skills.
Creating an emergency readiness plan for home.
Demonstrating first aid for common ailments.
Developing an exercise plan and participating in exercises for 30 days.
Using the Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace principles on a hike.

Scouts in 5th grade are Arrow of Light scouts.  Arrow of Light adventures include:

  • Learning flag etiquette and how to lead a flag ceremony.
  • Learning more about the community and government, including with a community leader.
  • Demonstrating leadership skills by independently planning a den activity without leader help.
  • While camping, choosing a good site for a tent and setting up a tent without adult help.  
  • Learning how to tie a bow line, square knot, two half-hitches, and a taut line hitch and learning when each knot would be useful.
  • Learning about Scouts BSA, including meeting with a Troop.
  • Working as a den to practice the patrol method.
